Your Toolkit came about after a conversation between Rosie Batty AO (former Australian of the Year and someone who faced domestic violence that culminated in the murder of her son) and Lyn Beazley AO (former West Australian of the Year). Lyn asked Rosie what we could do to help and the idea behind Your Toolkit was born.
Our volunteer team spent more than two years researching the need for, and availability of, information and education catering specifically to women facing domestic and family violence including financial abuse. We interviewed domestic violence survivors, support workers, women’s refuge staff, industry bodies including the Women’s Council for Domestic and Family Violence, 1800 Respect, staff from Legal Aid Domestic Violence Unit, social workers and others. Your Toolkit was developed specifically based on the findings of this research.
Our organisation, Financial Toolbox, built and now maintain Your Toolkit via The Financial Toolbox Women at Risk Trust (“the Trust”). The Trust was established in August 2019 for the purpose of providing support to women and their children facing, or having faced, domestic violence and/or financial abuse. The Trust is registered as a charity by The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission and is a Public Benevolent Institution endorsed with Deductible Gift Recipient status for tax purposes.
Since those early days, we have been grateful for the assistance and support of a great many volunteers and other supporters without whom Your Toolkit could never have been built.
